I dropped out of my advertising course in college after we learned about the techniques used to manipulate the masses into buying a product. I didn't want to brainwash people. I wanted to enlighten them. Nonetheless, I received much useful information that helped me in later years to identify and shield myself from psychological manipulation on TV. One very commonly used tactic is 'association'. When we see people or things together, we tend to connect them. I do not wish to be connected to any of the people who associated their image with mine. And yet, this seems to be all others have offered the world to inform them about me in my absence. If they're not connecting me with disgraced stars who stole my work, they're connecting me to childhood friends who cause me embarrassment. Old music videos from a time when I just wanted a peaceful, domestic life circulate now as if to challenge my rock. What associations do people make when they think of me? Dateline scandals, entertainment fraud, shameful soup lines, reprobate roadies... There's so much filth and crime around the very mention of my name that I wouldn't be surprised if some parents block their children from reading my work. That's a real shame because I'm the innocent one in all this mess. Feels like I've been on trial for six years. |
